This lovely client asked me to create a brand new website to promote and sell their upcoming new book releases “Louisa’s Lament” and “An English Tradition”.
The design of the site needed to reflect the character of the company and the books published which were historical, serious and academic.
The specification included a woo-commerce based check-out system, integrated with preferred payment systems. Variations between hardback and paperback versions and national and international postage.
Once the bookshop was complete we added an art shop selling framed illustrations, in sizes from A5 to A3 and variations on frame colour which preview in the product page before checkout.
Also included are author biographies, interviews, newsletter signup and the contact us page.
We’re currently working on adding events such as book signings and a latest news section which will integrate together into a single blog archive.
When Paul Wilson first contacted me he wasn’t receiving any new clients from his website (only from social media) and although he’d spent a great deal of time investing in creating new pages and blog posts he wasn’t seeing any improvement.
After a quick rummage in his Google Search Console and Google Webmaster Tools it became clear that Paul had inadvertently triggered a soft google penalty by ranking for a phrase that could be considered “adult”. Like many phrases in the English language this phrase has several meanings, and one particular got the big “g’s” knickers in a twist – for no good reason at all.
Unfortunately you can’t appeal a soft penalty, you can only remove the offending item and slowly build your trust back organically by sending Google all the right signals.
That was the bad news – the good news was that his Google My Business listing had plenty of room for improvement and that would deliver new customers from his website within a much shorter time frame.
Following an analysis of the keywords that should bring traffic we started optimising the content of his website to improve his rankings. We also optimised for User Experience and conversion, so the new visitors would be more likely to click the all important “Contact Us” or “Book a Free Consultation”.
I welcome a challenge, especially with SEO, we’re currently working on Paul’s backlink profile and expect to see further improvements over the next 6 months.
